Initial Application
All human subject research conducted by Texas A&M University employees or students is required to be submitted to the Human Subjects' Protection Program for review. Once submitted, applications are routed to the appropriate reviewer(s) based on data collection methods and the level of risk.
There are three levels of review - Exempt, Expedited and Full Board.
Exempt research is "exempt" from the federal regulations. By definition, all exempt research must be minimal risk. In order to capitalize on the flexibility allowed in exempt research, a separate application process has been developed. (Use the Exempt Application Process)
Expedited review of research is conducted by an IRB member and all federal criteria of approval must be met. By definition, all expedited research must be minimal risk. (Use the Standard Application Process)
Full Board Review is conducted by the convened IRB of any research presenting more than minimal risk to subjects or any research using data collection techniques not expressly authorized under exempt or expedited review. (Use the Standard Application Process)
A flowchart is available to assist you in determining if you may qualify for an exemption. All proposed research not eligible for an exemption must be submitted for review on via the standard application process.
