Continuing Review

Federal regulations (Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy) require that all animal use undergo continuing reviews of activities. Reviews must be conducted at least annually. Therefore each year principal investigators must complete an "Annual Review Form" for every active AUP they have on file with the IACUC. The Annual Review Form may be downloaded from this site.

When completing the "Annual Review Form" it is very important to respond to all of the questions. Historically, question 6 and 7 have been the most challenging for investigators to answer. However, it allows the IACUC to meet federal mandates that require an investigator not only to verify that alternatives have not become available in the last year, but to identify how they went about making that determination (e.g., by providing the names, keywords, and dates of databases searched; providing other sources of information such as attendance at workshops, professional meetings or laboratory visits).

Before returning the "Annual Review Form", the IACUC Committee asks that the investigators ensure that ALL questions have been answered and requested information provided. The purpose of review is to ensure that no changes have taken place inadvertently in the approved activity that might require further review and that any new requirements of the PHS, USDA, or the institution are transmitted to the investigator. For additional information about the form or assistance in its completion please contact the IACUC office (845-1828).
